# The Weather Service issues a Level 6 warning for the northern and eastern parts of South Africa
# And rugby, the Lions secure a bonus point victory over Lyons in a crucial Challenge Cup encounter
# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa’s land reform remains one of the most urgent tasks of the national democratic revolution. Ramaphosa delivered the January 8 statement at the ANC 114th celebration in Moruleng, North West. He says key tasks include strengthening support for land reform beneficiaries, accelerating the processing of outstanding restitution claims and resolving disputes more efficiently:
# Ramaphosa also condemned what he calls a vocal minority spreading falsehoods to undermine South Africa’s constitutional democracy. He warned against claims of so-called white genocide, saying they fuel global racist agendas. Ramaphosa said these forces aim to destabilise the state. He called on South Africans to unite, defend the Constitution, and reject intimidation at home and abroad:
# The South African Weather Service says a low-pressure system currently located over the southern parts of Mozambique is expected to significantly influence weather conditions over the north-eastern parts of South Africa from today. A level 6 weather warning has been issued for Mpumalanga, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says the anticipated impacts include flooding leading to damage to infrastructure and settlements as well as injuries and danger to life:
# Gauteng police say two cars suspected to have been used as getaway cars after a cash-in-transit heist in Roodepoort yesterday were found at a house in Meadowlands, Soweto, soon after the robbery. Police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo says a white BMW and Nissan Hardbordy bakkie, are confirmed to have been hijacked in Gauteng and North West, respectively. He says a group of suspects robbed a cash-in-transit armored vehicle and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash:
# The DA says it will continue to demand honesty, transparency and accountability about the naval vessels participating in Exercise Will For Peace 2026 in Simon’s Town in the Western Cape. The party says the Defence Department is misusing the BRICS label to hide military alignment. The DA’s Chris Hattingh says BRICS is not a military alliance and government is choosing closer military ties with rogue and sanctioned states such as Russia and Iran:
# And rugby: The Lions secured a crucial bonus-point victory of 42-33 in their Challenge Cup encounter in Johannesburg, scoring six tries to French side Lyon’s five. The Lions led 28–14 at halftime, but Lyon fought back to trail by only two points late in the second half. A decisive try by replacement hooker Morné Brandon in the 78th minute sealed the win and their first points of the competition, keeping their playoff hopes alive.
