# President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the 25-member Presidential Climate Commission for the 2026–2030 term, following public nominations under the Climate Change Act, 2024. The commissioners, including Nasiphi Moya and Shaamela Soobramoney, bring expertise in climate policy, sustainable development, energy, and social justice. Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says Ramaphosa has urged them to provide evidence-based advice and facilitate inclusive dialogue to advance South Africa’s just transition and climate-resilient economy:
# Border Management Authority commissioner Michael Masiapato says the Department of Home Affairs and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will assist to ensure proper handling of migrants and asylum seekers this weekend. Higher numbers of people are expected to return to South Africa as the return leg begins after the peak holiday season. Speaking at the Beitbridge border post, he confirmed that additional processing areas to manage the increased flow of people have been implemented:
# The Cape Independence Party has noted president Cyril Ramaphosa’s response to an EFF member of Parliament, Mogale Mafika, regarding a referendum on independence for the Cape. CAPEXIT’s Frans Martins says his rejection of even a debate reflects the same centralising mindset that has failed millions of South Africans, especially the people of the Western Cape. He says that when a central government cannot ensure safety and provide economic stability, those regions are entitled to pursue alternatives:
# KwaZulu-Natal premier Thami Ntuli has emphasised the need for education on resolving family disputes to halt murder in families. This follows the fatal shooting of a mother, her son, and two daughters in near Mdweshule, Port Shepstone. Relatives reported that the family had received prior threatening messages. Speaking to Newzroom Afrika, Ntuli called on society to strengthen community engagement to protect vulnerable families and address pressing social issues.
# Sports News:
# Cricket: The Proteas selection panel has announced the 15 players for the Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka from 7 February to 8 March. Aiden Markram will lead the side, with maiden call-ups for Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, and Jason Smith. Kagiso Rabada returns to the group after missing the white-ball tour against India due to an injury. The Proteas are in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Arab Emirates, and will begin their campaign on 9 February against Canada.
# And rugby: SA Rugby will establish a national coaching forum to deepen and expand communication between national team coaches and franchise and provincial union coaching staff. The president of SA Rugby, Mark Alexander, confirmed that SA Rugby supports the Springbok coaching staff in assisting the Bulls and other teams that may request such collaboration by providing a sounding board and exchanging ideas. Alexander confirmed that SA Rugby was looking to establish the coaching forum in the new year to formalise support and collaboration with members.
