# Minister McKenzie links DJ Warras’s murder to hijacked buildings
# The GOOD Party says the violence on the N2 continues as the City of Cape Town deflects blame
# And New South Wales considers emergency gun laws following the Bondi Beach shootings
# The minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, extended condolences on the death of Warrick Stock, widely known as DJ Warras, who was shot and killed in Johannesburg yesterday. McKenzie describes him as a respected broadcaster and cultural figure who nurtured young talent and celebrated South African creativity. He believes foreigners involved in building hijacking may be connected, and says those responsible will be held accountable:
# The GOOD Party says Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’s attempt to shift responsibility for violent crime along the N2 to roads agency SANRAL is misleading and contradictory. In the latest incident, a 64-year-old retired teacher from Bloemfontein was fatally stabbed while travelling from the Cape Town International Airport. GOOD’s Siyabulela Mamkeli says the stretch of the N2 between the airport and the city centre is not maintained by SANRAL:
Moving abroad:
# Australian state New South Wales is considering the introduction of stricter gun laws following the mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Premier Chris Minns told a news conference Parliament would return on Monday to consider urgent reforms, including capping the number of firearms allowed by a single person and making certain types of shotguns harder to access. The surviving gunman, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, is recovering in hospital and will face 59 charges, including terrorism and murder. His 50-year-old father, Sajid, was shot dead by police.
Meanwhile, US investigators have released a new enhanced video and picture of the suspect believed to be responsible for the Brown University shooting, which left two students dead. Nine others were wounded at the Ivy League institution in Rhode Island. A person of interest detained earlier has been cleared. Providence police chief Oscar Perez says the person in the video can be seen casing the area before the crime:
# Golf: South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter has become the third South African to claim the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award, joining Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman. The 21-year-old Mossel Bay player earned the Arnold Palmer Award after winning the Rocket Mortgage Classic, becoming the youngest South African to secure a PGA Tour title. Potgieter was the only rookie to reach this season’s FedEx Cup Playoffs and led the tour in driving distance, averaging 297 metres. The honour requires eligibility participation in at least 15 official FedEx Cup events.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-76-cents and the euro at 19-rand-64-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-34-cents and Bitcoin trades at 86-thousand-594-dollars.
