# The City of Cape Town says investment in modern laboratory equipment will help ensure continued access to water resources of the highest standard. The city’s Scientific Services Branch is a world-class facility that is at the forefront of water and air quality research. Mayoral committee member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says over the past few years, the city has invested more than 30-million-rand in laboratory equipment. He says this includes instrumentation capable of analysing metals, cyanides, total organic carbon and disinfection by-products among others:
# The City of Ekurhuleni has launched its Clean Your Kasi, Manje Namhlanje campaign. This grassroots initiative aims to address the persistent issue of illegal dumping and the grass-cutting backlog that has developed across the metro. The city’s spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, says the campaign aims to promote greater cooperation with residents and communities to look after their immediate environment:
# And finally: France has implemented a temporary ban on nearly all commercial fishing in the Bay of Biscay to safeguard dolphins. Around nine-thousand of the animals annually face accidental entanglement in fishing gear. The ban, effective from Monday until 20 February, impacts fishing grounds along the Atlantic coast. Local fisherfolk criticised the move as absurd, expressing financial concerns, but the government assures compensation. The measure aims to address the high dolphin mortality rate attributed to fishing-related incidents in the area.
