# Suspended Police minister Senzo Mchunu says the political killings task team was never a permanent unit within the South African Police Service. Mchunu, currently on special leave, appeared before the Madlanga commission in Pretoria yesterday and will continue his testimony on Thursday. Mchunu told the commission it took him five months to fully understand the department before taking decisive action to disband the task team in December last year:
# The EFF says it fully supports the establishment of a portfolio committee to provide oversight on the work of the Presidency. The National Assembly adopted new rules on Tuesday that will establish such a committee where the budget of the Presidency can be scrutinised, and the president and deputy president can account once per year on key policy matters, amongst other things. The EFF’s Nontando Nolutshungu emphasised the importance of establishing a dedicated committee to hold the office of the Presidency accountable:
# Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, says the total adjustment budget for the province is 3.3-billion-rand, supported by rollovers and national and provincial contributions. He presented the Gauteng Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement and Adjustment Budget on Tuesday. In terms of injections to the fiscal envelope, a total of 2.2-billion-rand is being added to the 2025/2026 main budget. Maile says the hosting of the recent G20 Leaders’ Summit has generated more than one-billion-rand for the provincial coffers:
# The US State Department says under president Donald Trump’s leadership, the G20 will return to focusing on its core mission of driving economic growth and prosperity to produce results. America has assumed the G20 Presidency, taking over from South Africa. The State Department says it will prioritise three core themes: unleashing economic prosperity by limiting regulatory burdens, unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains, and pioneering new technologies and innovations. The US will host the first G20 Sherpas meeting in Washington on December 15 and 16.
# Cricket: The Proteas are under pressure to save the one-day series against India when the penultimate of the three matches are taking place in Raipur today. The hosts won Sunday’s high-scoring first match in Ranchi by 17 runs when the visitors just fell short of the huge target of 350. The Proteas just won the Test series 2-0, but lost both white-ball series against Pakistan before moving to India. The final ODI will be played in Viskhapatnam on Sunday, followed by three T20s.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-9-cents and the euro at 19-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 91-thousand-638-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-207-dollars-48-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-20-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Cape Town Sevens Fan Walk this weekend provides ticket holders with a safe, pedestrian route between the CBD and DHL Stadium during the HSBC Sevens tournament. Starting near the Civic Centre and Thibault bus stations, the walk connects to the stadium, with a secondary route linking to the V-and-A Waterfront. Organisers encourage fans to use the Fan Walk or free MyCiTi shuttles, as stadium parking is unavailable and road closures will be in effect.
