# The DA rejects Netanyahu’s recent statements
# Israel faces another challenge in international court
# And, soccer: The defending champions stay on track at Afcon
# The DA has rejected Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state as part a post-war scenario. During a live address on Thursday, Netanyahu claimed Israel must have security control over all territory west of the Jordan river, acknowledging that this collides with the idea of sovereignty. The DA’s Emma Louise Powell says throughout this tragic war, the party has remained steadfast in it commitment to a two-state solution that results in the creation of a sovereign and unoccupied Palestine, co-existing in peace next to a secure Israel.
In another development, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry has welcomed a request by Chile and Mexico for the International Criminal Court to investigate crimes against civilians in the war between Israel and Gaza. Israeli attacks have devastated the Gaza Strip since Hamas fighters launched a deadly surprise attack inside Israel on 7 October last year. Chile and Mexico say the ICC in The Hague is the proper forum to establish potential criminal responsibility. They cite numerous United Nations reports that detail many incidents that could constitute crimes under the court’s jurisdiction.
# Brand South Africa hopes to have instilled confidence in investors at the World Economic Forum, shifting their mindset from uncertainty to assurance. The global leaders’ conference in Davos, Switzerland, concluded yesterday. Brand SA’s acting CEO, Sithembile Ntombela, emphasises transparency was a top agenda item during the engagements. She says South Africa sought to communicate acknowledgment of challenges and assure investors of interventions to address them. :
# Cricket: Ryan Rickelton’s unbeaten 94 helped M-I Cape Town to a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over the Paarl Royals in the SA20 at Newlands last night. The Royals were restricted to 172 for eight in their 20 overs. In reply, Rickelton’s opening stand of 81 with Rassie van der Dussen set the tone for the chase, with M-I Cape Town ending on 175 for two. The Royals have yet to beat M-I Cape Town in three attempts. They will have a chance to do so in the return leg in Paarl tomorrow afternoon.
# And, soccer: Defending champions Senegal beat Cameroon 3-1 at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast to seal their place in the last 16. With one point from two games, the Indomitable Lions will have it all to do in their final group stage game against Gambia. In an earlier match, former Manchester United forward Bebe scored a long-range free-kick as Cape Verde beat Mozambique 3-0. The victory means Cape Verde have guaranteed top spot in Group B, ahead of former champions Egypt and Ghana.
