# The Institute of Race Relations says race no longer structures the electorate’s values or priorities. This is the key conclusion of the third and final report on the institute’s latest polling. A total of 76-percent of South Africans surveyed agree that politicians use talk of racism and colonialism to excuse their failures. The IRR’s Hermann Pretorius says the ANC’s continued reliance on race-based quotas, procurement targets, and expropriation policy is not only misaligned with minority voters but opposed by majorities within its own base.
# The National Assembly has approved the Justice and Constitutional Development Committee’s recommendation for advocate, Dinkie Dube, to be appointed as the deputy Public Protector. She will fill the position that was left by advocate Kholeka Gcaleka, who was appointed as the Public Protector two years ago. The National Assembly’s recommendation for the approval of Dube’s appointment will now be forwarded to president Cyril Ramaphosa. The IFP’s Thokozani Langa expressed his confidence in Dube:
# The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa has condemned the Bombela Operating Company, which manages the Gautrain, for unlawfully deducting workers’ salaries from their accounts. At the end of October, Gautrain erroneously paid some workers double. Numsa’s spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola, says management has harassed workers to repay the money immediately. She adds that some employees were unable to comply because they had already used the funds:
# One of the two members of the US National Guard, who were shot near the White House in Washington on Wednesday, Sarah Beckstrom, has died. The two were working when a suspect approached them and opened fire. Beckstrom died in the hospital, while the other member, Andrew Wolfe, is still fighting for his life. The suspect has been identified as an Afghan national, Rahmanullah Lakanwal. US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro says the Justice Department will seek the death penalty:
# Soccer: Two South Africans will handle matches during the Africa Cup of Nations, starting in Morocco on the 21st of next month. Abongile Tom and Zakhele Siwela were named on the final list of 28 referees and 31 linesmen, together with 14 video match officials. Siwela is a veteran of seven Afcon tournaments and also officiated during the previous two World Cup tournaments. Tom handled matches during the previous Afcon tournament and was also a referee for the recent World Cup qualifier between Gabon and Nigeria in Rabat.
