BULLETIN 26 November 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# South Africa’s cricket team wins their first Test series in India in 25-years
# The former CEO of the Road Accident Fund says SCOPA’s inquiry is a kangaroo court
# And the latest UN report shows over 50-thousand women and girls were killed intentionally last year
# We start with cricket: Reigning ICC World Test Champions, South Africa, has defeated India by a massive 408 runs to secure their first series win on Indian soil in 25 years. Simon Harmer claimed six wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 140 in their second innings of the second and final Test. The Proteas posted 489 in their first innings with Senuran Muthusamy scoring 109. In reply, India were bowled out for 201 with Marco Jansen taking six wickets. In their second innings, South Africa declared on 260 for five.
Now on to other news:
# Former Road Accident Fund CEO, Collins Letsoalo, is adamant he will not appear before Parliament’s standing committee on Public Accounts’ inquiry into maladministration at the financially distressed fund. He failed to appear at the inquiry yesterday, ignoring a subpoena. SCOPA has heard evidence from former and current employees related to the management of the RAF’s financial affairs under Letsoalo’s tenure, which ended in August. Letsoalo told the SABC the committee is acting outside of its powers:
Meanwhile, the DA says Letsoalo must face criminal charges. The DA’s Patrick Atkinson says evidence shows Letsoalo’s mismanagement since 2020 created billions of rand in liabilities, delayed compensation for thousands of claimants, and fostered a toxic work environment for staff. Atkinson adds ignoring a lawful parliamentary summons cannot be tolerated, urging Parliament to take decisive action.
# Gauteng Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has rejected claims of food shortages in public hospitals, saying these allegations are misleading. The DA’s Jack Bloom said he found patients last week receiving only a slice of bread with margarine and cheese at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. This raised concerns about patient nutrition and the impact of the temporary shutdown of the government-owned Masakhane Cook Freeze factory, due to E.coli contamination. Nkomo-Ralehoko says hospitals continue to provide three meals a day:
Moving abroad:
# Every ten minutes, partners and family members killed a woman intentionally last year. This is according to the latest report from United Nations Women. The report states that around 50-thousand women and girls worldwide were killed by their intimate partners or other family members last year. Africa recorded the largest number of female intimate partner and family-related killings with an estimated 22-thousand-600 victims. UN Women’s Sarah Hendriks says technology-facilitated violence in some cases leads to femicide:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-16-cents and the euro at 19-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-63-cents and Bitcoin trades at 87-thousand-706-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-151-dollars-28-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-10-cents a barrel.
