BULLETIN 25 November 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA reports Zuma-Sambudla to Parliament’s Ethics Committee over the alleged trafficking of South Africans to Russia
# Civil summonses for debt dropped by 6.6-percent in September
# And rugby: The Boks’ scrum coach says the clash against Wales is an opportunity for younger players
# The DA has reported MK Party member of Parliament, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, to Parliament’s Ethics Committee. This comes after her sister, Nkosazana Bongamini Zuma-Mncube, accused her and two others of playing a part in luring 17 young South African men into travelling to Russia under false pretences, and then being forced to fight in the Ukrainian war. The DA’s Chris Hattingh says the party will also file a criminal case with police against Zuma-Sambudla and others:
# Statistics South Africa reports a decline in civil debt cases from July to September this year. Civil summonses fell by 6.6-percent and civil judgements by 6.5-percent compared with the same period last year. Stats SA’s Vhonani Kwinda says despite this, the total value of civil judgements shows that while fewer cases were processed, larger debts are being recovered:
# Western Cape premier Alan Winde has rejected claims that the release of a report confirming gang infiltration in top police structures in the province was politically timed. An investigation was launched after Western Cape High Court Judge Daniel Thulare warned in a 2022 ruling that the 28s gang had infiltrated top police ranks, even gaining access to meetings with the provincial police commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, and his senior managers. Winde says the release of the report was driven by a growing crisis of public trust in policing.
# Rugby: Springbok scrum coach Daan Human says the match against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday is another opportunity for the younger players to impress. Both teams will be missing several choice players as the clash falls outside of the international window. The Boks have won 11 out of their 13 Tests so far this season, while Wales have won only two of their 10 games. Human says missing some players won’t have a disruptive impact, as they are used to rotating match-day squads:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-26-cents and the euro at 19-rand-90-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 87-thousand-874-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-45-dollars-42-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-39-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Vogue’s global creative director, Anna Wintour, has defended the decision to make billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sánchez, the primary donors for the 2026 Met Gala. The secondary sponsors are French luxury brand Saint Laurent and Vogue publisher Condé Nast. Traditionally, the fashion gala has been supported by luxury fashion houses. Critics have argued the couple’s involvement highlights a shift towards billionaire control of cultural institutions. Wintour says she is very grateful for the Bezos’s incredible generosity.
