# Mining tycoon Patrice Motsepe says South Africa must urgently tackle its crime reputation to attract greater investment. He was speaking at the Bloomberg Africa Business Summit in Johannesburg. Motsepe says South Africa has enormous potential with world-class businesses and leadership, but safety concerns deter investors. He recalls global executives questioning whether their families would be safe, and warns the country’s bad name on crime threatens its economic ambitions:
# The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed the death of murderer and rapipst Moyhdian Pangkaeker in the Brandvlei Maximum Centre at Worcester in the Western Cape. He was convicted in 2023 for kidnapping, raping, and murdering eight-year-old Tazné van Wyk in 2020. The department’s Singabakho Nxumalo says Pangkaeker was serving a life sentence for multiple offences, including murder, rape and assault:
# Former Public Enterprises minister, Malusi Gigaba, is expected to step aside from his ANC duties after being charged with corruption linked to Transnet’s 54-billion-rand locomotive deal. He appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng yesterday as fifth accused in the state-capture case. Gigaba has maintained his innocence, but the ANC says he must comply with its step-aside rule. The case has been postponed to 30 January for the disclosure of the docket and the setting of a date for transfer to the High Court.
Moving abroad:
# A fire ripped through more than 170 buildings and killed one person in a southern Japanese coastal city, with crews of military and firefighting helicopters scrambling to extinguish the country’s largest urban blaze in almost half a century. Aerial footage shows houses reduced to rubble and thick plumes of smoke rising from the hilly Saganoseki district of Oita city. An area, roughly the size of seven soccer fields, were completely raized and 175 residents had to be evacuated and given temporary shelter.
# Cricket: Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been drafted into South Africa’s squad for the second Test against India, starting in Guwahati on Saturday. The 30-year-old has been brought in as cover for Kagiso Rabada, who missed the first Test in Kolkata after suffering a rib injury during training. South Africa won the match by 30 runs. Ngidi has played only one Test in India. Meanwhile, Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer are also nursing injuries and could be a doubt for the second Test.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-18-cents and the euro at 19-rand-89-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-55-cents and Bitcoin trades at 91-thousand-116-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-90-dollars-16-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-8-cents a barrel.
