Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, rugby: Springbok lock Franco Mostert’s permanent red card in last weekend’s Test against Italy has been rescinded, making him available for Saturday’s clash with Ireland in Dublin. He was sent off in the 12th minute of the match in Turin, forcing the Boks to play the rest of the match with only 14 players. They nevertheless won 32-14. A disciplinary committee found the match officials erred in their decision, and downgraded the red to yellow. Coach Rassie Erasmus is announcing his team tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Irish centre Robbie Henshaw expects a proper test on Saturday to ascertain where the team stands at the moment. Ireland lost to New Zealand and didn’t impress in their victory over Japan, but bounced back ruthlessly against the Wallabies last weekend, winning 46-19. Henshaw hopes they can back up that display with another big performance. He says the Springboks are currently the talk of the rugby world for grinding out victories when they look dead and buried.
# Cricket: Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been drafted into South Africa’s squad for the second Test against India, starting in Guwahati on Saturday. The 30-year-old has been brought in as cover for Kagiso Rabada, who missed the first Test in Kolkata after suffering a rib injury during training. South Africa won the match by 30 runs. Ngidi has played only one Test in India. Meanwhile, Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer are also nursing injuries and could be a doubt for the second Test.
More cricket news: Former English bowler Stuart Broad says his country’s best chance of winning the Ashes hinges on how well they play in the first two Tests. The visitors last won the series in Australia in 2011, with the Baggy Green winning their last three home series comprehensively. Broad says England’s record is shocking at the Gabba in Brisbane, where the third Test takes place, saying they will have a major problem if they lose the first two matches. The first Test starts in Perth on Friday.
# And soccer: Scotland has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years when they beat Denmark 4-2. Goals from Scott McTominay, Lawrence Shankland, Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean secured automatic qualification for Scotland. Austria fought back from a goal down to draw 1-all with Bosnia-Herzegovina to qualify for the global showpiece for the first time since 1998. 2010 champions Spain, Belgium and Switzerland also punched their tickets to next year’s World Cup to be held in the US, Canada and Mexico.
