Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: South African pair Senuran Muthusamy and Laura Wolvaardt have been named the ICC men’s and women’s player of the month for October, respectively. Muthusamy has been rewarded for his stellar performances with both bat and ball during the Proteas’ two-Test series in Pakistan. The 31-year-old scored 106 runs and claimed eleven wickets. Wolvaardt led the Proteas Women to the one-day World Cup final, where she amassed 470 runs and scored three fifties and two centuries.
# On to rugby: Winger Edwill van der Merwe says the Springboks are expecting a fast-paced, unpredictable battle against Italy in Turin on Saturday. Both teams come off inspiring victories – the Boks roped in France despite a red card to win 32-17, while the Azzurri beat the Wallabies 26-19. Van der Merwe describes Italy as a team whose attacking structure and flair mirror that of Argentine, and ascribes this to Argentinian coach Gonzalo Quesada’s influence. Bok head coach Rassie Erasmus will name his team this afternoon.
Meanwhile, two Springboks – 23-year-old eighthman Cameron Hanekom and 24-year-old prop and hooker Jan-Hendrik Wessels – have extended their contracts with the Bulls. Both will now play for the Pretoria-based union until the end of the 2028 season. Hanekom and Wessels are regarded as influential Test players of the future. Blue Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone says they pride themselves as a club where champions are made, and the two players’ decision to extend their contracts is a massive vote of confidence in the Bulls family.
# Soccer: Zambia’s coach, Moses Sichone, accuses Bafana Bafana of underrating them before Saturday’s international friendly in Gqeberha. South Africa uses the encounter to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations, starting in Morocco on the 21st of next month. Sichone reacted to some South African soccer circles suggesting Bafana would gain more from playing strong opposition like Brazil, vowing to prove the hosts wrong. He says Zambia is taking the match very seriously and hopes to get a positive result.
# And tennis: Defending champion Jannik Sinner has sealed his place in the last four of the ATP Finals in Turin. The Italian defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev to extend his winning streak on indoor hard courts to 28 matches. Sinner still has a chance to claim the year-end number one ranking, but needs to defend his title and hopes that Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t win another match. Meanwhile, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime claimed his first victory at the season-ending tournament, beating American Ben Shelton in three sets.
