Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# AfriForum will challenge the Expropriation Act in court next year
# Trump signs the funding bill to formally end the US government shutdown
# And Boeing is ordered to pay more than 485-million-rand to the family of a 737 MAX crash victim
# AfriForum says deputy president Paul Mashatile reaffirmed that the ANC remains committed to expropriation without compensation, a policy adopted at the party’s 2017 conference. The party’s Ernst van Zyl says the Expropriation Act, signed by president Cyril Ramaphosa, enables the government to proceed despite Parliament’s failure to amend Section 25 of the Constitution. Van Zyl warned property rights are under threat, and confirmed plans to challenge the cct in court next year.
Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema says AfriForum and Solidarity must be charged for engaging in activities that undermine the sovereignty of the country. The lobby groups have played a visible and strategic role in shaping US perceptions of South Africa’s land-expropriation policies, minority-rights discourse and Afrikaner advocacy. Malema says South Africa must never be compromised by the racist interests of small minority groups:
US president Donald Trump has meanwhile signed the short-term government funding bill, bringing an end to the longest shutdown in American history. This comes after the House of Representatives voted 222 to 209 to pass the bill in a deal struck between Republicans and centrist Senate Democrats last night, two days after the Senate approved it. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said this is a victory over Democrats, adding they will never give in to extortion:
# A federal court jury in Chicago ordered US airplane manufacturer Boeing to pay 478-million-rand to the family of a United Nations environmental worker who was killed in the 2019 crash of a 737 MAX in Ethiopia. The damages awarded to Shikha Garg’s family is the first in dozens of lawsuits filed after that disaster and another in Indonesia the previous year which combined killed 346 people. A Boeing spokesperson says they are deeply sorry for all who lost loved ones on the two flights.
# Rugby: Stand-in Springbok Women’s Sevens head coach, Cecil Afrika, says he has confidence in the players he has picked for the Africa Women’s Sevens Cup in Kenya this weekend. South Africa is in Pool A along with Zambia, Ghana, and Egypt, and needs a top two finish to continue their quest to claim Sevens Challenger Series qualification. The 12-player squad is led by Nadine Roos. Afrika says they are in control of their own destiny and ready for the challenge:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-99-cents and the euro at 19-rand-74-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-32-cents and Bitcoin trades at 103-thousand-648-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-236-dollars-82-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-30-cents a barrel.
