# The court bars the use of Bongani Ntanzi’s confession against Muzi Sibiya in the Senzo Meyiwa trial
# The ex-EMPD deputy chief Revo Spies slams the dubious CAT VIP agreement
# And, Discovery Bank is hit with a 3-million-rand fine over non-compliance
# The High Court in Pretoria has ruled that the state cannot use the alleged confession of accused two, Bongani Ntanzi, to cross-examine accused one, Muzi Sibiya, in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. The defence argued Ntanzi’s statement cannot be applied to others. The ruling comes as police originally investigated intruders in the 2014 shooting of the Bafana Bafana captain, where Ntanzi’s statement refers to Sibiya as the lookout man outside Meyiwa’s girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus, Gauteng, when two intruders entered.
# Retired Ekurhuleni Metro Police deputy chief Revo Spies has told the Madlanga Commission he had never heard of CAT VIP Protection until seeing its memorandum of understanding with the EMPD. Spies says the deal promised luxury vehicles, a helicopter, and operational support to metro police. He describes the document as poorly drafted, legally flawed, and effectively outsourcing police powers to a private company, calling it deeply irregular and alarming:
# The Prudential Authority has imposed administrative sanctions and a three-million-rand financial penalty on Discovery Bank for non-compliance with the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. The bank was cited for inadequate anti-money-laundering controls, including failing to report 24 suspicious transactions on time and not providing mandatory staff training to many employees, including senior managers. Discovery Bank stated it has cooperated and remediated the issues, noting no actual money laundering was found.
# Western Cape Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism MEC, Ivan Meyer, says the inaugural Western Cape Investment Summit articulated the core vision of the province’s Growth for Jobs Strategy. Six major investment declarations with a total investment value of 50-billion-rand were made during the summit. In 2024, the provincial economy grew by 0.5 percent, matching the national average. Meyer says the Growth for Jobs Strategy is leading the charge toward a one-trillion-rand economy by 2035:
# Rugby: New Zealand winger Caleb Clarke has been ruled out of this coming weekend’s Test against England at Twickenham after failing a head injury assessment. He was injured during the All Blacks’ 25-17 victory over Scotland on Saturday. Captain and lock Scott Barrett is expected to be back for the clash with England after missing the Murrayfield encounter with a leg laceration. Beating England will keep the All Blacks on track to complete a Grand Slam of victories over the home nations for the first time since 2010.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-18-cents and the euro at 19-rand-88-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-65-cents and Bitcoin trades at 105-thousand-920-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-94-dollars-23-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-80-cents a barrel.
