# The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption has confirmed that former Public Enterprises minister Malusi Gigaba has not been arrested. He was summoned to a Pretoria police station this morning over alleged irregularities in Transnet’s procurement processes during his tenure from 2010 to 2014. While the exact charges remain unclear, Gigaba says he will cooperate fully and his conscience is clear. The directorate’s spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says the investigations continue:
Meanwhile, suspended Police minister Senzo Mchunu has not been informed of his appearance date before the Madlanga commission. His spokesperson, Sthembiso Mshengu, told Newzroom Afrika Mchunu, who previously testified before Parliament’s ad hoc committee, will continue preparing his testimony despite his devices being seized by the KwaZulu-Natal political killings task team at his Pretoria home last night. He says the seizure will impact Mchunu’s preparations for the commission hearing:
# Gauteng Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has warned residents about rising malaria cases in the province. Ekurhuleni is one of the districts with the highest number of cases in the province, recording 25 cases per 100-thousand people between January 2022 and December last year. The rise in cases is mainly attributed to travel to endemic areas such as Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi during the festive and Easter seasons. Nkomo-Ralehoko says residents must seek medical attention immediately if they show symptoms after travelling to high-risk areas.
# Electric car company Tesla’s shareholders have approved a record-breaking pay package of more than 17-trillion-rand for CEO Elon Musk. This is the largest corporate pay award in history. More than 75-percent of shareholders voted in favour of this unprecedented package. The approved pay package will come in the form of 12 tranches of stock, and could give Musk control over 25-percent of Tesla if he hits a series of milestones, including expanding the company’s market capitalisation over the next decade.
# Cricket: Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, hopes to be fit for the second Ashes Test against England, starting in Brisbane on the fourth of next month. He will sit out the first encounter, starting in Perth on the 21st of this month. A lower-back issue has sidelined the fast bowler since July, and Scott Boland is expected to replace him for the opener. This will be the first time Cummins won’t play in an Ashes Test since making his debut in the first Test against England in 2017.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-32-cents and the euro at 20-rand-1-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-70-cents and Bitcoin trades at 100-thousand-648-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and 6-dollars-50-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 63-dollars-97-cents a barrel.
