# The Activists and Citizens Forum is calling for the immediate arrest of the bodyguard of the suspended deputy national police commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya. Testifying before the Madlanga commission of inquiry, Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo revealed that Stuart Scharnick’s records show 34 criminal cases. He was found guilty on 18 of them, eleven were withdrawn and he was found not guilty on five. The forum’s Dennis Bloem says Scharnick is a danger to society:
# The MK Party has appointed former Finance minister Des van Rooyen as its new chief whip in Parliament. He is taking over from Colleen Makhubele, who was appointed to the position in May. The MK Party has described Van Rooyen as a seasoned cadre of the liberation movement who brings extensive academic, political, as well as governance experience. The party adds it has full confidence that under his stewardship its caucus will be strengthened, disciplined, and more strategically aligned with its mission.
# The Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services has placed a property in Gouda under quarantine. This comes after a farmer in the Free State reported suspected foot-and-mouth disease lesions in cattle recently transported from the Gouda area. The department’s spokesperson, Mary James, says during the inspection, veterinarians observed suspected lesions in the animals’ mouths. She adds samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to confirm or rule out FMD.
Moving abroad:
# The death toll from the UPS cargo plane crash near the Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky in the US has risen to seven, with eleven people suffering significant injuries. The freight plane, which was bound for Honolulu, Hawaii, crashed shortly after taking off last night. # Rugby: Irish lock Tadhg Beirne’s controversial red card in the Test against New Zealand in Chicago last weekend has been rescinded. The 33-year-old was shown a yellow card when he and Beauden Barrett collided, and it was upgraded to red by foul play review official Dan Jones. An independent disciplinary committee accepted Beirne’s submissions that, whilst an act of foul play had occurred, it did not meet the red card threshold. He will be available to play against Japan in Dublin on Saturday.
