# Government says the momentum generated by South Africa’s G20 Presidency has provided a unique platform to showcase the country’s tourism offerings to thousands of international delegates. More than 7.6-million international tourist arrivals were recorded between January and September this year. Deputy government spokesperson, William Baloyi, says the country has reinforced its position as a thriving hub for leisure, business, and tourism:
# The Minerals Council South Africa says optimising the regulatory environment is key to unlocking the full economic potential of the mining industry. Last year, the industry contributed 470-billion-rand to household income and supported over 3.5-million people, including workers and suppliers. The sector paid 342-billion-rand in taxes, invested 160-billion-rand in equipment and infrastructure, and sold 248-billion-rand in minerals locally. The council’s Allan Seccombe says a stable, investor-friendly environment will boost mining, jobs, and economic growth.
# The ANC in the Ekurhuleni Region commends the swift action by law enforcement authorities, which led to the arrest of a suspect believed to be linked to the recent mass shooting in Reiger Park. Six people were killed in a drive-by shooting over the weekend, while three others were wounded. A 23-year-old man was arrested on Monday and will appear in court today. The ANC’s Jongizizwe Dlabathi says they welcome the police’s efforts to restore safety and security within Reiger Park:
# Self-described democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is projected to win the New York City mayoral race. The 34-year-old is up against former governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. If elected, Mamdani would make history as New York’s first Muslim mayor, the first South Asian to hold the office, and one of the youngest mayors elected in modern times. Meanwhile, Democrat Abigail Spanberger has been elected governor of Virginia, becoming the first female governor of the southern state.
# Soccer: Bayern Munich has gone top of the Champions League table after beating defending champions Paris St-Germain 2-1, to make it four wins out of four. Arsenal also remain unbeaten in the league phase of the competition, following their 3-0 win against Slavia Prague. An Alexis Mac Allister goal secured a 1-0 victory for Liverpool over 15-time winners Real Madrid. Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Copenhagen 4-0 while Juventus played to a 1-1 draw against Sporting CP. There were also wins for Atletico Madrid and Monaco.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-49-cents and the euro at 20-rand-10-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-78-cents and Bitcoin trades at 101-thousand-700-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-962-dollars-92-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-25-cents a barrel.
