Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: The Proteas Men and Pakistan are facing off in the first one-day match in Faisalabad today. Matthew Breetzke captains the team in the absence of Aiden Markram, who is rested before the tour of India. Pakistan clinched the T20 series 2-1 in the final match in Lahore on Saturday. The Test series which started the tour, ended in a 1-all draw. Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad says he is disappointed in the T20 loss, but was pleased with the performance of some of the players.
# Soccer: South Africa got their FIFA Under-17 Men’s World Cup off to a winning start, recording a 3-1 victory over Bolivia in Doha, Qatar. Goals from Emile Witbooi, Neo Bohloko, and substitute Shaun Els ensured the Amajimbos registered their first-ever win in only their second appearance in a World Cup since 2015. The victory also saw coach Vela Khumalo’s charges make history, becoming the first South African national team to win their opening match at a World Cup. Amajimbos will next face hosts Qatar on Thursday.
# Rugby: New Zealand will be without both captain Scott Barrett and his brother Jordie for Saturday’s Test against Scotland at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. Scott suffered a cut on his leg in the third minute of their 26-13 victory over Ireland in Chicago last weekend, which required stitches. Jordie suffered a high ankle injury during the match. Fabian Holland and Josh Lord are likely to start at lock, with Sam Darry and Samipeni Finau the other options.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s head coach, Andy Farrell, doesn’t want any further excuses from his team during the rest of their autumn campaign after going down 26-13 to the All Blacks in Chicago in the US on Saturday. The Irish squandered their 13-7 lead after 60 minutes to lose to New Zealand for the third time in a row. They play Japan in Dublin this coming weekend. Farrell believes Ireland can bounce back in the remaining November home matches against Eddie Jones’ side, the Wallabies and the Springboks.
# And finally, tennis: The ATP Finals, starting in Turin, Italy, on Sunday, will decide who ends the year in the number one ranking. Local hero Jannik Sinner reclaimed top spot from Carlos Alcaraz when he won the Paris Masters, but the Spaniard will return to number one next week when Sinners’ points from winning last season’s Finals are removed from the 52-week rankings. Even if Sinner wins the tournament undefeated, Alcaraz will end the year on top of the world if he reaches the semifinal.
