# Police have confirmed controversial businessman, Brown Mogotsi, survived a shooting in Vosloorus on the Gauteng East Rand last night. According to preliminary information, multiple gunshots were fired at Mogotsi’s vehicle, but he managed to escape unharmed. He has been accused of involvement in purported complicity between politicians, the police and organised crime. National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says they have opened a case of attempted murder:
# COPE says the outcomes of the weekend’s meeting of the government of national unity failed to address the urgent and mounting challenges facing ordinary South Africans directly. President Cyril Ramaphosa hosted a two-day GNU retreat in Gauteng where the leaders of political parties reaffirmed their commitment to the coalition government. COPE’s acting national chairperson, Pakes Dikgetsi, says the leadership within the GNU has chosen to prioritise the survival of power over the survival of the people:
Meanwhile, the GOOD Party says criticism of the state’s implementation of land reform and Black Economic Empowerment policies is warranted, but opposing the need for transformative policies is something else. This comes as renowned South African golfer Gary Player has called for an urgent repeal of the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act, underscoring his belief that it is a significant barrier to attracting investment in South Africa. GOOD’s secretary-general, Brett Herron, says Player should have kept his political views to himself:
Moving abroad:
# The convicted Australian murderer, Erin Patterson, has officially lodged an appeal against her convictions. The 51-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 33 years in September for murdering three relatives and trying to kill another with a toxic mushroom meal at her home in the state of Victoria in 2023. The grounds for her appeal have not yet been disclosed. Throughout her trial, Patterson maintained her innocence, arguing that it had all been a terrible accident.
# Rugby: New Zealand will be without both captain Scott Barrett and his brother Jordie for Saturday’s Test against Scotland at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. Scott suffered a cut on his leg in the third minute of their 26-13 victory over Ireland in Chicago last weekend, which required stitches. Jordie suffered a high ankle injury during the match. Fabian Holland and Josh Lord are likely to start at lock, with Sam Darry and Samipeni Finau the other options.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-43-cents and the euro at 20-rand-9-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-84-cents and Bitcoin trades at 104-thousand-171-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-999-dollars-72-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-17-cents a barrel.
