In this bulletin:
# Thabo Mbeki warns of anti-revolutionary forces within the ANC
# Hamas hands over the remains of three more hostages
# And rugby: Asenathi Ntlabakanye replaces the injured Ox Nché in the Bok squad
# Former president Thabo Mbeki has warned that there are anti-revolutionary forces within the ANC, and that factionalism and careerism among members are the biggest threat to the party’s survival. He was speaking at the ANC Veterans League’s Political School in Gqeberha, where declining electoral support, internal factionalism, and the quality of leadership within the party were discussed. Mbeki stated that the party cannot solve South Africa’s challenges unless it renews itself and restores ethical leadership. He adds that change must begin at the branch level.
# National Student Financial Aid Scheme board chairperson, doctor Karen Stander, has resigned with immediate effect. In her resignation letter to minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela, Stander said the environment within which the board has operated has become increasingly toxic, characterised by bullying, intimidation, racism, and hostility. She says these conditions have made it impossible to continue discharging her duties effectively and in good conscience. Stander described her resignation as not an act of defiance but one of conscience.
# Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has called on police to hunt down those behind the deadly drive-by shooting in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni. Six people were killed and three others were wounded after occupants of two Polo vehicles opened fire on them on Saturday evening. A specialised police investigating team is probing the shooting. Addressing the Reiger Park residents on Sunday, Lesufi also condemned reports that some police officers were working with criminals, saying such conduct undermines the fight against crime:
# Israel Defence Force says it has received the bodies of what Hamas claims are three more deceased hostages held in Gaza. Reportedly, one of the bodies is that of an Israeli-American dual national, Omer Neutra. If confirmed as deceased hostages following the identification process, it would mean eight deceased hostages remain in Gaza. Israel has accused Hamas of being too slow to return the deceased hostages, while the militant group has said it is working to recover bodies trapped under rubble in the territory.
# Rugby: Springbok prop Ox Nché has been ruled out of the remainder of the year-end tour of Europe through injury, with Asenathi Ntlabakanye named as his replacement. Nché suffered a leg injury during South Africa’s 61-7 victory against Japan at Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday. Ntlabakanye made his Test debut for the Boks in July against Italy. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus says Ntlabakanye was on the standby list for the tour, and is familiar with the structures and systems of the team:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-31-cents and the euro at 19-rand-96-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-74-cents and Bitcoin trades at 108-thousand-430-dollars.
