# An Eastern Cape teacher is denied bail on human trafficking charges

# The National Prosecuting Authority has successfully opposed bail for 52-year-old teacher Vuyokazi Gana, accused of human trafficking, running a brothel, and profiting from prostitution. The East London Magistrate’s Court ruled no exceptional circumstances justified her release. Gana, arrested on the 15th of this month, allegedly coerced young women into prostitution. The case continues on 28 November. The NPA’s Luxolo Tyali says the court highlighted the seriousness of the offences and the need to protect victims:
# The GOOD Party has lodged a fraud complaint against Western Cape MECs, alleging they knowingly tabled a false provincial budget last year. The complaint was filed at the Cape Town Central Police Station and targets Health and Wellness MEC, Mireille Wenger and Education MEC David Maynier. GOOD secretary-general Brett Herron says the 2024 budget underfunded two-thousand-400 teacher posts by 3.8-billion-rand, despite both MECs being aware of the shortfall:

# Hurricane Melissa strengthened as it took aim at Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean as a top-level Category 5 storm. The US National Hurricane Centre says Melissa was packing maximum winds nearing 260 kilometers per hour. Up to a meter of rainfall were forecast, with deluges expected to bring flash flooding and landslides to Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Melissa has been blamed for at least four deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic this week, as its outer bands brought heavy rains and landslides.
# Cricket: Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is undergoing treatment in hospital after suffering a lacerated spleen while taking a catch in Sydney against Australia last week. He sustained an impact injury in his left lower rib cage region as he pulled off a sensational back-pedalling catch to remove Alex Carey, a key moment in the third one-day international that India won by nine wickets. Despite the victory, India lost the series 1-2 after suffering defeats in the first two games in Perth and Adelaide.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-35-cents and the euro at 20-rand-41-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 114-thousand-882-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-660-dollars-94-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-14-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Oliver and Adelaide Tambo were remembered for their pivotal role in South Africa’s liberation struggle during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tamboville Cemetery in Gauteng today. The event was hosted by the Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni.
