BULLETIN 17th October 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The Freedom Front Plus demands that the Ekurhuleni Municipality in Gauteng urgently attend to the severe sewage pollution crisis at the Boksburg Lake. The party’s Denise Janse van Rensburg says the lake has turned into a toxic cesspool where raw sewage flows freely, causing a terrible stench. She says the metro’s dereliction is endangering the lives and health of residents:
# Environmental organisations have urged G20 delegates attending the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group Ministerial Meeting in Cape Town to oppose oil and gas drilling, protect oceans, and safeguard coastal livelihoods. The meeting ends today. Green Connection’s Lisa Makaula says they are calling for renewable energy, fair climate finance and clean energy projects:
# And finally, Brazil has requested support from the European Union in establishing the Tropical Forests Forever Fund to protect tropical forests. The main goal of the fund is to provide annual payments to countries with tropical forests as a reward for maintaining or increasing forest cover. Tropical forests cover about 12-percent of Earth’s land surface. Brazilian minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, says it is proven that indigenous territories and peoples are the ones who preserve biodiversity and forests the most, significantly contributing to climate balance.
