Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: South Africa secured a thrilling three-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Visakhapatnam to make it three consecutive victories in the Women’s World Cup. Shorna Akter’s unbeaten 51 powered Bangladesh to a competitive 232 for six. In reply, the Proteas were reduced to 78 for five, but Marizanne Kapp and Chloé Tryon put together an 85-run partnership to keep South Africa in the game. Nadine de Klerk then came to the rescue again, scoring an unbeaten 37 to guide the Proteas to victory with three balls to spare.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says his players are mentally ready for their must-win final World Cup Group C qualifier against Rwanda in Mpumalanga tonight. South Africa played to a goalless draw against Zimbabwe last Friday, and now needs to beat Rwanda and hope that Nigeria defeats Benin to qualify automatically for next year’s World Cup. Broos says he is confident in his players that they will win the game:
Meanwhile, no country has ever won the World Cup with a foreign-born coach, but Carlo Ancelotti says there was always a first time as he eyes glory with Brazil. The Italian became Brazil’s first overseas coach in six decades when he took over in May and he helped the five-times champions punch their ticket for next summer’s World Cup in Northern America. Brazil will face Japan in a friendly in Tokyo today, fresh from a 5-0 hammering of South Korea in Seoul last week.
# Athletics: Five men and five women have been nominated for the World Athletics Awards track athlete of the year. American trio Noah Lyles, Rai Benjamin, and Cordell Tinch, together with Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Jimmy Gressier of France, have been nominated for the men’s track athlete of the year. In the women’s category, Kenyan duo Beatrice Chebet and Faith Kipyegon, American duo Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, and the Netherlands’ Femke Bol have been nominated. Nominees for the remaining categories will be announced later this month.
# And tennis: Five men among the world’s top ten are competing in a lucrative exhibition event in Saudi Arabia from tomorrow – the so-called Six Kings Slam. Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, Italian Jannik Sinner, German Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, and American Taylor Fritz, as well as world number-25, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, are competing for prize money of a whopping 78-million-rand. According to reports, some of the players will also receive massive sums to appear. Sinner beat Alcaraz in last year’s final.
