# President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on the government of Israel to release South Africans and other nationals abducted as part of Israeli authorities’ interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. The president’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya says the flotilla comprises humanitarian vessels seeking to deliver aid to Gaza. He says South Africans who were on board the flotilla include Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, Zukiswa Wanner and Reaaz Moola, while confirmation is pending on the abduction of Zaheera Soomar, Fatima Hendricks and Carrie Shelver.
Meanwhile, the GOOD Party says the Israeli government’s use of starvation as a weapon, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the targeting of aid convoys are violations of international law. Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other activists were aboard the fleet of Gaza-bound aid ships. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says they are also calling for the immediate release of activists detained:
# Gauteng police have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old man at the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. The victim was attacked in the parking area after apparently visiting a friend. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Police spokesperson Tinswalo Sibeko confirmed that a murder case has been opened and investigations are ongoing. No arrests have been made so far.
# The DA says criminalising baby savers will lead to the needless deaths of hundreds of babies. The Department of Social Development wants to change the Children’s Act so that safe baby drop-offs are treated as child abandonment. The party argues the move is reckless and unconstitutional. The DA’s Alexandra Abrahams warns that without safe relinquishment, more infants will be abandoned in unsafe places such as dumpsites, fields, and sewers:
# Cricket: Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling charge with seven wickets between them as the hosts dismissed the West Indies for 162 on day one of the first Test. A depleted West Indies won the toss in Ahmedabad but the Indian attack struck regular blows to bowl out the visitors in the 45th over in the second session. Siraj returned figures of four for 40 to extend his tally of Test wickets to 27 this year. Bumrah took three wickets for 42 runs.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-18-cents and the euro at 20-rand-18-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-16-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-708-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-881-dollars-53-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-88-cents a barrel.
