Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 2 October 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The DA in the Eastern Cape says it has managed to expose ongoing sewage pollution caused by the non-functional Nursery pump station in Aliwal North. The party recently conducted an oversight visit where it found untreated sewage flowing directly into the Orange River, and pollution continuing downstream into the Gariep Dam. The DA’s Marina van Zyl says this ongoing untreated sewage discharge is a direct violation of the National Water Act and the National Environmental Management Act:
# The GOOD Party says it supports initiatives that promote civic responsibility and community involvement, including efforts to tackle illegal dumping and keep Cape Town’s public spaces clean. The party’s Anton Louw says, however, the City of Cape Town’s annual #SpringCleanCT campaign is deeply disingenuous when viewed against the backdrop of its punitive cleansing tariff. He says if the metro truly wants to honour the spirit of the campaign, it should begin by cleaning up its own budgetary practices:
# And finally: World-renowned primatologist and conservationist, Jane Goodall, has passed away at the age of 91. She died due to natural causes in California during a speaking tour in the US. Considered the leading expert on chimpanzees, her career spanned more than 60 years, during which she not only broke barriers for women but also changed the way scientists study animals. The Jane Goodall Institute says Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionised science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of the natural world.
