BULLETIN 29 September 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Conservation experts are warning of rising human-wildlife conflicts in South Africa after incidents involving lion, elephants, and a hyena attack in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. Tourism consultant Cameron Doyle says habitat loss, agricultural expansion, and climate change are forcing wildlife into closer contact with people, while risky human behaviour worsens the danger. With Africa’s population now 1.4-billion, pressure on natural habitats is growing, reducing animals’ tolerance of humans. Doyle urges stricter safety awareness to prevent further tragedies.
# Environmental groups, including Green Connection, will protest outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre during Africa Energy Week 2025, which gets underway today. The event unites African energy leaders for four days of intense dialogue on the future of the African energy industry. Green Connection’s Lisa Makaula says they are calling for investments in community-owned solar, wind, and resilient food systems. She adds that they are also advocating for a just and inclusive energy transition that prioritises people over profits:
# And finally: Today is International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day, a day to promote awareness and collective action to reduce food loss and waste. Globally, around 13.2-percent of food produced is lost between harvest and retail, while an estimated 19-percent of total global food production is wasted in households, in the food service, and in retail altogether. The United Nations’ Food and Agricultural Organisation says reducing food loss and waste helps to protect natural resources and biodiversity, reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and maximise the use of food produced.
