Private CCTV owners welcome Joburg’s move to repeal restrictive by-law

# The City of Johannesburg plans to repeal its controversial private CCTV by-law, which required privately-owned cameras overlooking public spaces to be registered and restricted how footage could be shared. The move comes after legal challenges from the South African Property Owners Association, AfriForum, and Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, who argued the by-law was unconstitutional and overreaching. Private security operators, including Vumacam, criticised the rules as restrictive and harmful to crime prevention. The city will table the repeal at the end of this month.
