Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell say’s they’re going for a clean sweep against the Wallabies after already securing their first series victory since 2013. He says the plan will stay the same despite the tourists winning the second Test in Melbourne on Saturday to take on unassailable lead. Farrell believes his players have already earned the right to be considered Lions legends. The tourists won all eight previous matches in Australia, with the final Test being played in Sydney this coming Saturday.
Meanwhile, World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin has expressed support for the match officials involved in the second Test. Officials have faced criticism, including from Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt and Rugby Australia’s CEO, Phil Waugh, for not penalising Jac Morgan for a clear-out in the lead-up to Lions fullback Hugo Keenan’s match-winning try. Gilpin says they are undertaking their normal review of the refereeing decisions, but the findings won’t be made public.
# Soccer: Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says they knew their quest to defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title would not be easy. The team arrived back in South Africa following their fourth-place finish in Morocco after losing 3-4 on penalties to Ghana in the bronze medal match. Ellis says she is proud of the players’ overall contribution:
# Roadrunning: The new board of the Two Oceans marathon plans a meeting with the City of Cape Town to iron out their differences. This follows after the organisers approved more participants for the half-marathon this year, violating the permit and leading to the metro withdrawing its support and sponsorship. It also threatened not to grant a permit for next year’s race unless there are major organisational changes. New board member Stuart Mann says Friday’s meeting would be the start of restoring the city’s trust.
# And finally, cricket: India may still use the world’s best Test bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, to try and win the final Test against England to draw the series. It was decided beforehand he would only play three matches because of a back injury, but with England leading 2-1, head coach Gautam Gambhir says they haven’t decided on his participation yet. Captain Shubman Gill says Bumrah looks fully fit at this stage and it would be brilliant if he could play at the Oval in London from Thursday.
