# The Madlanga Commission will have the power to refer cases for immediate criminal investigation

# The judicial commission of inquiry that will probe the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, will have the power to refer matters for immediate criminal investigation and urgent decisions on prosecution. This is according to the terms of reference for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which have been gazetted. Amongst other things, the commission will investigate infiltration of criminal syndicates in law enforcement. The commission will file two reports to president Cyril Ramaphosa, one after three months and the second after six months.
Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema claims there are deep divisions within the police. Speaking to the media, Malema insisted that the truth on the allegations made by Mkwanazi must come out through evidence presented to Parliament’s ad hoc committee. He vowed to participate in the probe, saying he is not aligned with any faction, including cartels:
# The Democratic Alliance says any partnership between the City of Tshwane and the Iranian government must be carefully considered, warning it could damage South Africa’s international reputation. This follows reports that the Iranian embassy may be involved in plans to repair and lease the dilapidated Pretoria City Hall. The DA’s Cilliers Brink urges mayor Nasiphi Moya to provide answers, as the matter must be openly debated in council before any agreement is made:
# Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says it is reviewing a revised response from Hamas to a proposed ceasefire and hostage-release deal. This comes as Israeli air and ground strikes continued to pound the Gaza Strip. Hamas confirmed it had handed over a new proposal, but did not disclose its contents. Reuters reports a previous version was rejected by mediators as insufficient and was not even passed to Israel. Both sides are facing huge pressure to reach a deal, with the humanitarian conditions inside Gaza deteriorating sharply.
# Rugby: New Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann says egos won’t be tolerated at Loftus, and each player will have to earn his place in the team. He promised his men they would always know where they stood with him. Ackermann wants a team that works hard, and also warns that every player will have to serve the team first. He says he doesn’t want to be the director of rugby like his predecessor, Jake White, but the coach who gets his hands dirty on the field.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-61-cents and the euro at 20-rand-71-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-392-dollar. Gold sells at three-thousand-369-dollars-12-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-44-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Wrestling icon and actor, Hulk Hogan, has passed away at the age of 71. Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, died due to cardiac arrest. Known for red and yellow outfits and his larger-than-life personality, he soared to fame in the 1980s and helped World Wrestling Entertainment achieve global recognition. Hogan also appeared in movies, including 1982’s Rocky III, Mr. Nanny, and Suburban Commando. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
