Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We begin with rugby: The Junior Springboks are through to the final of the World Rugby Under-20 Championship following a 48-24 victory over Argentina in Viadana, Italy. South Africa scored six tries with Albie Bester crossing the line twice, to Argentina’s three. The Junior Boks will face New Zealand in Saturday’s final after the six-time champions defeated France 34-26. This final will be a repeat of the 2012 title decider, which South Africa won on home soil at a sold-out Newlands Stadium.
Meanwhile, Springbok lose forward Jasper Wiese is facing a disciplinary committee of World Rugby today after his straight red card during Saturday’s second Test against Italy in Gqeberha. He was sent off by Irish referee Andrew Brace for a head butt during a confrontation in the first half. The Boks nonetheless won the match 45-0. Wiese can probably expect a harsh punishment given his not-so-good disciplinary record. The foul-play review committee sent the case straight through to a full hearing, indicating the severity of the charge.
# Soccer: Defending champions Banyana Banyana beat Mali 4-0 to finish top of Group C in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Lebohang Ramalepe opened the scoring in the fourth minute, with captain Refiloe Jane doubling the lead in the first half. Hildah Magaia scored the third goal in the 60th minute, and substitute Ronnel Donnelly rounded off the scoring, her first senior goal for South Africa. Coach Desiree Ellis’ side will face Senegal in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
# Cricket: South Africa claimed a five-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in their opening match of the T20 International tri-series at the Harare Sports Club. George Linde took three wickets as the hosts were restricted to 141 for six in their 20 overs, with captain Sikandar Raza scoring an unbeaten 54. In reply, debutant Rubin Hermann and Dewald Brevis starred with the bat, scoring 45 and 41 respectively, as the Proteas reached the target with 25 balls to spare. South Africa will face New Zealand tomorrow.
And more cricket news is that Australia completed a 3-0 whitewash in the Test series against the Windies when they humiliated the hosts in the final match in Kingston, Jamaika. The Windies were bowled out for the second lowest total of 27 – just one run more than New Zealand’s record in 1955. Mitchell Starc was the main destroyer, taking five wickets within his first 15 deliveries, which is a world record for the quickest five-wicket haul. He ended with six for nine, and Australia won the match by 176 runs.
