Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# BOSA demands accountability as Parliament probes Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive claims
# Government plans to hire more doctors and nurses
# And cricket: Jofra Archer is in England’s team for the third Test against India
# Build One South Africa has renewed its call for president Cyril Ramaphosa to fast-track investigations into explosive claims by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The allegations implicate senior police officials and minister Senzo Mchunu in political interference. Speaker Thoko Didiza has tasked parliamentary committees to urgently consider the matter. BOSA’s Roger Solomons praised Mkhwanazi’s courage and called for suspensions, a judicial inquiry, and bold action to restore public trust:
AfriForum has meanwhile called for an immediate halt to proposed changes to the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority regulations, citing the growing scandal involving businessman Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala. They want an independent investigation into PSiRA’s ties to criminal networks and political interference. AfriForum’s Jacques Broodryk demands disciplinary and criminal action against officials who allowed Matlala’s companies to operate despite serious criminal allegations:
# Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi today tabled a seven-billion-rand budget aimed at improving public healthcare and preparing for the rollout of the National Health Insurance. The plan includes building new hospitals, hiring more doctors and nurses, and permanently employing 27-thousand community health workers. Motsoaledi also announced 753-million-rand funding to fight HIV and tuberculosis, including the rollout of a new HIV prevention injection:
# The man accused of the murder of 14-year-old Lukhona Fose in Gauteng has been granted five-thousand-rand bail by the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court. The girl’s mutilated body was discovered in an open veld near her home, a day after she was reported missing. She was laid to rest in Komani in the Eastern Cape. Last week, Mduduzi Mnisi’s girlfriend, Pinky Gontsa, testified she was with him the day Lukhona went missing. The defence maintain their argument that there’s no evidence linking Mnisi directly to the murder.
# Cricket: Jofra Archer will make his long-awaited return to Test cricket at Lord’s tomorrow after more than four years of injury-induced exile. He was included in England’s side for the third Test against India in place of fellow fast bowler Josh Tongue in the only change to the team that suffered a 336-run thrashing by India at Edgbaston. Lord’s holds happy memories for Archer, who bowled the World Cup-winning ‘Super Over’ there in 2019 before returning later that season to make a stunning Test debut against Australia.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-76-cents and the euro at 20-rand-83-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-17-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-396-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-307-dollars-21-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 69-dollars-27-cents a barrel.
