# Government is urging all citizens to exercise heightened caution to prevent shack fires which often result in severe injuries or loss of life. Fires in informal settlements are frequently caused by open flame sources and the use of overloaded or illegal electricity connections. Government’s spokesperson, Nonkululeko Mtshali says communities are encouraged to build dwellings at least three metres apart to help prevent the rapid spread of fires:
