# Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya commuters have until July 1st to switch to the new orange smart cards. The switch is a result of the bus system upgrading to a cashless Account-Based Ticketing platform. The orange smart card, priced at 50-rand, connects directly to newly installed validators on all buses and stations. This upgrade is part of a 300-million-rand investment aimed at modernising Johannesburg’s bus service. Commuters, who have not switched by the deadline could face financial penalties.
