# UDM says it is alarmed by the Gauteng Education Department slashing subsidies to more than 290 independent schools. Subsidised independent schools in 2024 were reduced by 20-percent for secondary and 18-percent for primary schools because of budgetary constraints. This is despite the department failing to spend 317-million-rand of its 2024 education budget. UDM’s provincial secretary, Andile Jabavu, says this decision is not only fiscally unjustifiable but also morally reprehensible:
