UDEMWO welcomes life sentences on Moses Gqesha for rape

# The United Democratic Movement Women’s Organisation has welcomed the sentencing of Moses Gqesha to eight life terms for the 2010 rape of Andy Kawa. UDEMWO secretary-general Thandi Nontenja praised Kawa’s resilience but condemned the 15-year delay in justice, due to DNA backlog. Gqesha was arrested in 2024, despite evidence collected in 2020. She is calling for urgent reform, no parole for violent offenders, and a stronger state response to gender-based violence to ensure survivors are not failed again.
