# The Border Management Authority monitors motorists travelling back to South Africa
# And, financial aid secures a children’s radio station’s future
# Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, welcomes the arrests of two suspects in connection with the New Year’s Day shooting in Gugulethu. The incident claimed three lives and left one person seriously injured. The suspects face charges of murder and attempted murder and are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s court on Friday. According to Allen, the police investigation continues to uncover the motive behind the shooting incident:
# Border Management Authority commissioner, Michael Masiapato, says there is heightened monitoring of increased traffic at the Beitbridge port of entry in Limpopo. Masiapato says deployed authorities are diligently overseeing the return of holidaymakers to South Africa, ensuring compliance with proper documentation and preventing the entry of counterfeit goods or drugs at the border:
# The GOOD Party has expressed deep concern over Burundian president Évariste Ndayishimiye’s recent remarks, urging citizens to stone gay individuals. This intensifies the crackdown on sexual minorities, facing social ostracism and imprisonment for up to two-years for same-sex offences. Reflecting a disturbing trend in the region, the comments align with Uganda’s severe anti-LGBTQI-plus laws. The party is disappointed by African leaders’ silence and calls on South African leaders to condemn the statement. They advocate for LGBTQI-plus rights and urge leaders across Africa to denounce this hateful rhetoric.
# Soccer: Kylian Mbappé and his possible move to Real Madrid is expected to be the key theme of the transfer window that opens in Europe on Monday. Much attention will focus on Mbappé, who a year ago scored a hat-trick for France in the World Cup final only to finish on the losing side. Real Madrid are again the main suitor for the 25-year-old. It’s far from certain though, as the French are passionate about Mbappé. President Emmanuel Macron in June 2022 persuade him to stay at Paris Saint-Germain when a move to Real seemed certain.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-80-cents and the euro at 20-rand-53-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-73-cents and Bitcoin trades at 44-thousand-435-dollars-92-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-and-49-dollars-20-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 75-dollars-86-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The future looks brighter for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town’s radio station. RX Radio is run by, and for young patients, and faced financial difficulty leading to the loss of three staff members early last year. Now the Media Development and Diversity Agency approved funding to the tune of 660-thousand-rand for the hospital, while it also received over half-a-million-rand from a private American donor. Station manager Noluyolo Ngomani says this financial aid could really turn RX Radio’s trajectory for the better.
