# The chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, Malusi Gigaba, has cautioned that persistent underfunding of the South African National Defence Force jeopardises the country’s border security. Speaking to SABC News, Gigaba said international credibility, and economic growth is compromised as defence spending has declined from over two-percent of GDP in 1996 to 0.7-percent currently. He emphasised this limits the SANDF’s ability to fulfill obligations:
