# Donald Trump will return to the White House after claiming a victory over his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris. Trump was president between 2017 and 2021 and picked up his first swing state when winning North Carolina. An hour later he was declared the winner of Georgia, the state he narrowly lost to Joe Biden in 2020. He took Pennsylvania shortly afterwards, the most important of the seven battleground states. Trump surpassed 270 electoral college votes by winning Wisconsin. Republicans have also taken control of the Senate from the Democrats.
# The Independent Police Investigative Directorate says it’s moving forward with criminal and disciplinary actions against nine police members linked to the murder of Cape Town anti-gang unit detective Charl Kinnear in 2020. IPID has declassified its report and identified seven officials from the South African Police Service and two from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. # There are renewed calls for the nationalisation of South Africa’s lottery amid ongoing conflicts of interest with the National Lottery Commission. According to City Press, Trade minister Parks Tau withdrew the announcement of the new lottery operator due to fears of corruption and mismanagement. Several organisations, including the ANC, have argued that nationalising the lottery would ensure fair distribution of funds. The groups have demanded urgent action to restore transparency and accountability within the commission.
# Environmental groups, including the Green Connection and Extinction Rebellion, are calling for the government to stop partnering with fossil fuel companies amid the Africa Energy Week in Cape Town. They argue the event’s high costs exclude civil society from vital discussions that focus on oil and gas investments. The Green Connection’s Lisa Makaula says they plan to protest outside the venue, calling for sustainable development and protections for fishing communities affected by fossil fuel projects:
# Rugby: English referee Christophe Ridley will be the man in the middle when the Springboks take on Scotland at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Sunday. He will be assisted by compatriot Luke Pearce and Craig Evans from Wales. Australian Nic Berry will referee Friday night’s expected blockbuster between Ireland and the All Blacks in Dublin. New Zealand’s Ben O’Keeffe will handle Saturday’s clash between England and Australia at Twickenham in which South Africa’s Marius van der Westhuizen will be the TV referee.
