# Deputy president Paul Mashatile has once again assured citizens the government of national unity is working towards developing a common programme to create a better, more equal, and more just South Africa. Mashatile says the National Development Plan 2030’s goals remain the central pillar to guide the development approach. He says the government of national unity is focussing on strategic priorities, including creating inclusive economic growth and job creation, maintaining and optimising social wages, and building a capable, ethical and developmental state.
# EFF leader Julius Malema has reiterated that the party stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Malema was addressing the EFF’s 11th anniversary celebration in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. He says the party and all its members support the intensification of the war in defence of the oppressed, and the amplification of the voices of the marginalised:
# The City of Cape Town’s electricity teams attended to almost 19-thousand primarily storm-related faults in the past two weeks. Ongoing winter storms have wreaked havoc across the city, resulting in damages in excess of 16.6-million-rand to date on power infrastructure alone. Mayoral committee member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg, says the city’s Area South, which includes Mitchells Plain, Muizenberg, Wynberg and Gugulethu, recorded the highest incidents of damaged infrastructure:
# A wildfire in Northern California has more than doubled in size in 24 hours. Thousands of firefighters are battling the growing wildfire about 140-kilometres north of Sacramento, with evacuation orders and warnings issued for multiple communities. These include Paradise, the town that was devastated by the 2018 Camp Fire. A man was arrested last week on suspicion that he started the latest fire by pushing a flaming car into a gully. The Park fire is now the largest in the state this year,
# And, news from the Olympic Games: Spain’s dream doubles tennis team Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz won their first match together ever in Paris last night. They eliminated Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni of Argentina 7-6, 6-4. Nadal, who won Olympic gold in the singles in 2008 and in the doubles in 2016, is scheduled to play Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the singles first round today. With a likely victory, Nadal will face Novak Djokovic in the second round. The Serbian champion demolished the Australian Matthew Ebden 6-0, 6-1.
