# The top 30 candidates who will compete for the Miss SA title have been revealed, with Gauteng leading with 14 contestants. This year’s diverse group of hopefuls range from a medical student to graduates, teachers, and a choreographer. One of the contestants is 28-year-old Mia le Roux from the Western Cape, who was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the age of one. Others vying for the title include the runner-up in Miss Soweto in 2021, Ontshiametse Tlhopane, and Nompumelelo Maduna, who made the Miss SA top three in 2019.
# The life of three-year-old Leah-Rose McBean from Mossel Bay has been changed through a donation by the Western Cape government. She is set to receive a prosthetic leg after the provincial government donated to this life-changing cause through the help of sponsorships. The toddler was born with a rare condition that resulted in her right leg being amputated when she was a baby. Mossel Bay mayor Dirk Kotzé says it is an honour that he has played a small part in adding dignity to Leah-Rose’s life.
# Entries are now open for the allfashion Sourcing Cape Town Young Designers Competition. The competition is open to designers who are graduating this year, have graduated in the past five years, or are currently part of a design internship program. Now in its seventh year, the competition offers an incredible platform for emerging designers to showcase their talent and creativity by interpreting a unique design brief. This year’s theme is, Through the Lens of Africa. Entries close on the tenth of July.
# The Department of Water and Sanitation is urging high schools across the country to participate in the South African Youth Water Prize competition. The competition targets Grades nine, ten, and eleven learners, who possess innovative ideas and projects that can help tackle the water and sanitation crisis in their communities. The department’s spokesperson, Wisane Mavasa, says the competition starts at provincial level to national level and then proceeds to the global level in Stockholm, Sweden:
# And finally: Ultima Antarctic Expeditions has opened bookings for its upcoming Antarctic season, between November this year and February next year, with only 250 seats available. Guests fly from Cape Town to inland Antarctica in just 5.5 hours. Of the available seats, the most exclusive are just 100 seats for the ultimate experience: the South Pole and Emperors Expedition. This includes visits to ancient ice caves and the experience of observing penguins in their natural habitat. CEO Riaan Aucamp says they see the expeditions as creating future Antarctic ambassadors.
