Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: Springbok Sevens head coach Philip Snyman says he is optimistic about a top-four finish in the Singapore leg of the World Series this weekend. The Blitzboks face Spain, Samoa and France in their pool. Snyman says having experienced campaigners such as Siviwe Soyizwapi, Dylan Sage and Rosko Specman back, is a major boost for the team:
# Cricket: Cricket South Africa’s CEO, Pholetsi Moseki, has admitted they are battling to find a solution to the lack of black batters. This has seriously affected the transformation balance of the men’s national team going to the T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies next month. Coach Rob Walter’s 15-man team announced on Tuesday contained no black batter and only six players of colour – the lowest number the men’s team has taken to an ICC tournament since the 2016 T20 World Cup in India.
# Motorsport: The 14th edition of South Africa’s premier motoring and motorsport lifestyle event, the Simola Hillclimb, begins in Knysna in the Southern Cape today. Enthusiasts will see a wide range of classic cars on Hedge Street this afternoon. From tomorrow, Simola Hill will become the scene of adrenaline-fuelled excitement, starting with practice sessions for the Classic Car Friday competitors, followed by qualifying rounds. This will all lead to the class finals and the thrilling all-or-nothing top-ten shootout on Sunday, to determine who will be crowned Classic Conqueror for 2024.
More motorsport news: Red Bull has confirmed its design chief, Adrian Newey, will leave the Formula One team early next year. The 65-year-old, who joined the team in 2006, led the design of the cars that have taken the team to all 13 of their world titles in 20 seasons. Red Bull’s team principal and CEO, Christian Horner, has hailed Newey’s influence within the team, describing him as a true legend. According to reports, Ferrari and Aston Martin have approached Newey.
# And finally, golf: Fifteen-time major champion Tiger Woods says he is ready to play the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, later this month. The 48-year-old still has physical limitations in the wake of the 2021 car crash. Last month he completed the Masters, the fourth time Woods has managed all four rounds of a competitive event since his Masters title defence in November 2020. Woods says he still hopes to play one tournament a month for the rest of this year.
