# President Cyril Ramaphosa says despite the many challenges the country continues to experience, citizens are pioneering, resourceful, and resilient, often in the face of great odds. In his weekly newsletter, he says he is encouraged that young South Africans are self-assured about their human rights, citizenship, role and place in society, and potential. Ramaphosa says the government is determined to achieve the free, just, and equal South Africa for which millions voted on Freedom Day 30 years ago.
# The EFF leader Julius Malema has condemned party councillors accused of illegally selling land to residents in Gauteng, saying those found guilty will be expelled from the party. He addressed the community of Tembisa in Ekurhuleni yesterday, as part of the party’s campaign ahead of next month’s election. Malema reiterated that when the EFF is voted into power they will expropriate land without compensation:
# At least four people have been killed and dozens more are injured after multiple tornadoes wreaked havoc in Oklahoma in the United States. Extensive damage was caused in the town of Sulphur, with flattened buildings, vehicles being thrown into the air and roofs ripped from houses. Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt says a four-month-old baby is among the dead. Hospitals across the state reported about 100 injuries, including people apparently cut or struck by debris.
# Rugby: Glasgow Warriors are the new leaders on the United Rugby Championship log, having jumped above Leinster at the top of the table. Leinster are now just one point ahead of reigning champions Munster who made it back-to-back bonus point wins in South Africa by despatching the Lions. The Bulls lead the South African teams on the log in fourth place, the Stormers are fifth, the Lions eleventh, and the Sharks in 13th place among the 16 teams.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-79-cents and the euro at 20-rand-14-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-54-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-270-dollars-62-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-336-dollars-33-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 87-dollars-77-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Experts are predicting a warm winter for much of South Africa, attributing it to lingering effects of the El Niño climate pattern. El Niño-related climate is characterised by above-average temperatures and below-normal rainfall during the November-April season. Climate scientist, doctor Peter Johnston, told the SABC that expectations for the country this winter include higher temperatures and minimum rainfall in some regions:
