In this bulletin:
# The DA leader will unveil a plan to Rescue South Africa from unemployment on Freedom Day
# SARS is urged to inform people of the tax implications linked to the two-pot system
# And, cricket: Punjab Kings betters South Africa’s T20 record
# DA leader John Steenhuisen says as South Africans gather to celebrate Freedom Day today, he will be bringing the Rescue South Africa Tour to eThekwini. Steenhuisen says he will detail the party’s pledge to deliver real economic freedom to every South African under a new DA-led national government. As millions more South Africans join the unemployment queue, the party will show the country how it will Rescue South Africa from crippling unemployment. The event will also premier the next DA television advert known as Pathway to Victory.
Meanwhile, ActionSA leader, Herman Mashaba, and Gauteng premier candidate, Funzi Ngobeni, will lead the party’s Freedom Day commemorations in Orange Farm, Johannesburg, today. Mashaba says after 30 years of democracy, the country has not achieved true freedom as many of people remain stuck in a cycle of poverty while crime has spiralled out of control. He says this year, South Africans have the opportunity to turn around the decay by taking action to remove the ruling party in the upcoming elections and voting for an alternative that will put people first.
And, the general industries union Giwusa has declared the working class remains in chains 30 years after the end of apartheid. While acknowledging the historic victory over apartheid, the union condemns the ongoing socio-economic crises facing the working class, including poverty, unemployment and inadequate housing, which they blame on the ANC. Giwusa president Mametlwe Sebei criticises the lack of genuine alternatives offered by political parties in the upcoming elections:
# ANC MP Mmamora Mamaregane has urged the South African Revenue Service to inform people of tax implications linked to the two-pot system. This comes as the National Council of Provinces approved the Pension Fund Amendment Bill, which will pave the way for workers to cash in a portion of their pensions. The Bill will allow workers to tap into a third of their pension from the 1st of September this year:
# We end with cricket: Jonny Bairstow smashed an unbeaten century as the Punjab Kings recorded the highest successful run chase in T20 cricket with an eight-wicket thrashing of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. The England star hit nine sixes and eight fours in his 48-ball 108 to help Punjab overhaul Kolkata’s 261 for six at Eden Gardens with eight balls to spare. Shashank Singh joined in the party with 68 off 28 balls. Punjab’s achievement outshone South Africa’s 259 against the West Indies at Centurion in 2023.
