In this bulletin:
# Minister Nxesi says the massive training of unemployed people will be rolled out nationally
# The Road Accident Fund plans to clear the claim backlog of over 320-thousand in 120 days
# And, roadrunning: Onalenna Khonkhobe and Gerda Steyn win the Two Oceans
# Employment and Labour minister, Thulas Nxesi says the Unemployment Insurance Fund Labour Activation Programme to provide training for employment and entrepreneurship programmes is up-and-running in Gauteng. It is set to be rolled out in other provinces. The department’s spokesperson, Teboho Thejane, says South Africa finds itself in the throes of an ever changing technological era and this calls for adaptation:
# The Road Accident Fund says it is currently sitting with a claims backlog of 321-thousand and is committed to efficiently settling claims within 120 days. However, various challenges, including failure to submit all required documents, have impeded its efforts to finalise some of the claims, resulting in the backlog. The RAF’s spokesperson, McIntosh Polela, says people who submitted claims before April 2022 are urged to make sure the fund has all outstanding documents:
# A British surgeon who recently returned from Gaza has told the BBC how she was struck by the high number of wounded children she operated on. Victoria Rose says a “huge amount” of her work was on children under 16, including many under six. She says she treated people with bullet wounds, burns and other injuries. The Hamas-run Health ministry says over 76-thousand Gazans – mainly civilians – have been wounded in the war with Israel, while 33-thousand people have been killed.
# Roadrunning: Long-distance enthusiast Onalenna Khonkhobe and the seasoned Gerda Steyn have won today’s 56-kilometre Two Oceans ultra marathon around the Cape Peninsula. Their official times still have to be confirmed. Khonkhobe was sixth in his debut Two Oceans last year and the 28-year-old was determined to take the top spot this time around. Steyn claimed her fifth Two Oceans title in a row. She used the race as preparation for the Paris Olympics later this year after setting records in the Vaal Marathon and the Om-die-Dam race over 50-kilometres recently.
# And, golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler grabbed a one-stroke lead in the second round of the 88th Masters, while Tiger Woods made a record 24th consecutive cut at Augusta National. Five-time Masters champion Woods, now 48, achieved the milestone of surpassing Gary Player and Fred Couples’ streak of 23 straight cuts made. He is on one-over 145 after two rounds, six strokes off the lead and with plenty to do if he wants to stay in contention.
