Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA says Mapisa-Nqakula’s resignation does not absolve her from accountability
# The South African Council for Educators is ordered to reconsider the sanctions imposed on two teachers
# And Biden vows to protect Israel amid fears that Iran could launch a retaliation attack
# The DA is considering its options after Parliament’s Powers and Privileges committee resolved not to proceed with the investigation into former National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. This relates to her role in hiking Secretary to Parliament Xolile George’s salary by 70-percent, shortly after he was appointed. The committee says the former speaker resigning, means it no longer has jurisdiction over her. The DA’s Annelie Lotriet says Mapisa-Nqakula still needs to be held accountable:
# Section27 and the Centre for Child Law have welcomed the Supreme Court of Appeal judgment in the case against the South African Council of Educators. The court has ordered the South African Council for Educators to reconsider sanctions imposed on two teachers who assaulted pupils in separate incidents in Gauteng and Limpopo. The teachers received identical sanctions despite the severity of the assaults not being comparable. The court found that the council’s exercise of disciplinary powers had to be guided by its constitutional obligations that children’s rights were paramount.
# The High Court in Polokwane, Limpopo, will today sentence the five men found guilty of the murder of Collins Chabane mayor Moses Maluleke. He was shot and killed at his home in the Xikundu village while he was with his son in July 2022. National Prosecuting Authority’s regional spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, says the court found that the state proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt and that the offences committed by the accused were planned:
# US president Joe Biden has warned that Iran is threatening to launch a significant attack against Israel, in retaliation for the bombing of an Iranian consular building in Damascus. Thirteen people were killed in the bombing last week Monday, including senior Iranian military leaders. Israel has not formally taken responsibility for the attack but is widely considered to have been behind it. Biden says America’s commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is unbreakable.
# Cricket: The Gujarat Titans handed log leaders Rajasthan Royals their first defeat of this year’s Indian Premier League campaign following a three-wicket win. Riyan Parag scored 76 as he guided the Royals to 196 for three in their 20 overs. In reply, captain Shubman Gill laid the platform with his 72, and then with 40 needed off 15 balls, Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia got together to pull off the win off the final ball. Khan was happy with the victory:
