# Members of Parliament have raised concerns about the future of South African Airways without a strategic equity partner. This follows the cancellation of the sale of a 51-percent stake in the airline to Takatso Consortium. Deputy Public Enterprises minister, Obed Bapela, says government initially intended to have majority shares in the Takatso deal, but this could not be achieved due to the state SAA was in at the time:
# The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union says it notes with concern the decision by the Department of Higher Education to deregister four institutions owned by Educor. Damelin, City Varsity, Icesa City Campus, and Lyceum College have been deregistered over issues of gross non-compliance and corruption. Sadtu’s general secretary, Mugwena Maluleke, says Educor must reimburse the over 13-thousand affected students and pay outstanding salaries of lecturers and support personnel:
# The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development says South Africa has reported significant progress in containing foot and mouth disease outbreaks since 2021. Currently, only KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State have unresolved outbreaks in previously foot and mouth disease-free zones. Other affected provinces have resolved outbreaks, with no new cases reported in the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape, and the Western Cape. Restrictions remain in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. Clients are reminded to obtain the veterinary health requirements prior to preparing consignments for export.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his election as Senegal’s fifth democratically elected president. The 44-year-old contested the elections as an independent due to the dissolution of his Patriots of Senegal party last July for causing unrest. He has vowed to steer Senegal toward economic sovereignty. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says the president has committed to strengthening the bilateral relationship between South Africa and Senegal in pursuit of a better and peaceful continent:
# Tennis: Defending champion Daniil Medvedev has booked his spot in the semifinals of the Miami Open. The Russian beat Chilean Nicolas Jarry 6-2, 7-6 as he attempts to successfully defend a title for the first time in his career. The world number four will face Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a rematch of the Australian Open final earlier this year. Medvedev has reached the last four without dropping a set, while Sinner has lost only one match this year.
