Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The University of the Western Cape has become the first in South Africa to secure a tender for the implementation of green hydrogen energy training workshops for politicians and senior government officials at all levels. It came out top in a tender process among other top universities. UWC’s doctor Stanford Chidziva says the two-year contract worth 1.6-million-rand will see UWC’s South African Institute for Advanced Materials Chemistry conducting around 12 coaching sessions this year and in 2025:
# Global methane emissions from fossil fuels hovered near a record high last year raising concerns over insufficient efforts by governments and industry to mitigate the potent greenhouse gas. According to the International Energy Agency’s “Methane Tracker” report, there is an urgent need for the fossil fuel industry to slash methane emissions with 75-percent by 2030 to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement. Despite growing momentum and pledges, significant emission cuts have yet to materialise, risking climate targets.
# And finally: Shipping firm data indicates that retrofitting rigid sails to cargo ship, Pyxis Ocean, has significantly reduced its fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The six-month trial of British-designed WindWings demonstrated the potential of wind to cut the shipping industry’s carbon footprint. Cargill reported the ship used three tonnes less fuel daily on average, saving 11.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per day. Experts have also highlighted wind-assist technologies’ importance in decarbonising the shipping industry.
