# Holomosa says this year’s elections will be pivotal

# The United Democratic Movement leader, Bantu Holomisa, says this year’s elections will be among the most important occasions in South Africa’s history. Holomisa was speaking during the party’s manifesto launch in Midrand, Johannesburg. He says it will hopefully be the moment when the country rids itself of the one-party dominance of the ANC and the corruption it has tolerated for the last 30 years. According to Holomisa, it will be the moment when the people of South Africa regain their number one position on the national agenda:
In Soweto, the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania leader, Mzwanele Nyhontso, said as things stand in the country all people are not the same. Nyhontso delivered the party’s 2024 election manifesto in Orlando. He says any treacherous act must be frowned upon. Nyhontso adds there must be no room for corruption, selfishness and criminal acts by citizens and leaders at all levels, no matter who you are. He wants all South Africans to be treated equal under the law:
# Nicaragua has filed a case at the International Court of Justice against Germany for giving financial and military aid to Israel and for defunding the UN Palestinian refugee agency. Nicaragua asked the ICJ to issue emergency measures requiring Berlin to stop its military aid to Israel and reverse its decision to stop funding Palestinian refugees. According to Nicaragua’s claim, Germany is violating the 1948 Genocide Convention and the 1949 Geneva Conventions on the laws of war in the occupied Palestinian territories.
# Tennis: Isabella and Zoe Kruger played an impressive game against formidable opponents yesterday, but were ultimately edged out in the doubles final at the WIPHOLD International in Pretoria. The Kruger sisters were outplayed in the first set against the Russian pairing of Alina Charaeva and Ekaterina Reyngold. They fought back in the second set, but Charaeva and Reyngold maintained their composure to win 6-0, 5-7, 10-3. Isabella and Zoe are the daughters of 1995 World Cup-winning Springbok Ruben Kruger.
# And, the United Nations Environment Programme says extraction of the earth’s natural resources tripled in the past five decades. This is related to the massive build-up of infrastructure in many parts of the world and the high levels of material consumption, especially in upper-middle and high-income countries. According to a report, material extraction is expected to rise by 60-percent by 2060. The programme’s executive director, Inger Andersen, says the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature loss and pollution is driven by a crisis of unsustainable consumption and production:
