Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have Rugby: The Stormers are regarded as favourites when they travel to Pretoria to meet the Bulls in a United Rugby Championship clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. This is because the Cape team won all seven URC matches against their Northern opponents so far. The hosts have started a campaign to fill the stadium this time, having had to play in front of just a handful of supporters so far this season. The Bulls are currently third on the log and the Stormers sixth.
Meanwhile, the former Springbok assistant coach Matt Proudfoot is returning home. He was announced as new coach of the Leopards, with their headquarters in Potchefstroom, North West, just around the corner from his birth town of Klerksdorp. Proudfoot played for Scotland from 1998 until 2003 before filling coaching roles at North West University, Western Province, the Stormers and Kobelco Steelers. He was involved with the Boks from 2016 until after the 2019 World Cup, and then joined England’s coaching staff before a stint with Namibia’s national team.
# Soccer: Everton’s ten-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules has been reduced to six following their appeal. The English club was sanctioned in November last year, after being found to have exceeded permitted losses over an assessment period ending with the 2021-2022 season. The reduction has lifted Everton from 17th to 15th on the Premier League table. However, the club is facing another possible points deduction, after being charged along with Nottingham Forest last month for alleged breaches in their accounts for 2022-2023.
# Motorsport: The outcome of an independent investigation into Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, is reportedly set to be made public before this weekend’s season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. He was probed following an allegation of inappropriate behaviour made against him by a female colleague, which he denies. According to reports, the extensive investigation report is now in the hands of the Red Bull board, who will ultimately decide whether Horner remains in his dual roles of team principal and chief executive.
# And finally, Tennis: Three-time Grand Slam champion, Andy Murray, has suggested that he may only have a few months left of his playing career. The Briton returned from a set down to defeat Canadian Denis Shapovalov, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, in the first round of the Dubai Championships. This is his 500th tour-level win on a hard court, making him only the fifth male player in history to achieve this milestone. Murray says he probably does not have too long left to play:
