The Global Report on teacher shortages will also be launched at the forum. Department of Basic Education’s spokesperson, Terence Khala, says teacher shortages remain a complex and persistent obstacle to achieving global education objectives, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals for Education:
# Three foreign nationals are set to appear in the Northam Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo today in connection with the murder of a German tourist. Police spokesperson, Malesela Ledwaba, says the 74-year-old victim left Botswana last week Friday and drove to South Africa. He says when he arrived at Lephalale in Waterberg District, the German tourist offered an unknown male hitchhiker a lift. Ledwaba says they stopped at a liquor outlet where they picked up two of the suspect’s friends and drove to the victim’s accommodation in Moruleng, North West:
# DA Western Cape premier candidate, Alan Winde, says Knysna has been tragically captured by the ANC/EFF/Patriotic Alliance coalition of corruption and is being driven to the brink of destruction. He conducted a two-day oversight visit and engagement in the town over the weekend. Winde says Knysna residents are no longer guaranteed basic service delivery, as their daily challenges border on human rights violations with intermittent water supply, sewage spills, and refuse clogging the streets. He has urged residents to punish the coalition with their votes in the elections.
# Former Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has denied allegations that he took part in a coup plot in an attempt to stay in power. Police are investigating whether the 64-year-old incited a failed coup after losing the 2022 election. He is also accused of illegally receiving jewels from Saudi Arabia during his presidency. Bolsonaro told tens of thousands of supporters in São Paulo yesterday that the allegations against him were politically motivated. He has been barred from running for political office until 2030 due to two convictions of abuse of power.
# Golf: Sweden’s Björn Åkesson marked his comeback by winning the Nelson Mandela Bay Championship at Humewood Golf Club in Gqeberha. The 35-year-old retired in 2017 after losing his DP World Tour playing rights and falling out of love with the game. He posted a four-under-par round of 68 to win by one shot ahead of two-time Challenge Tour winner England’s Lee Slattery after the championship was reduced to 54 holes due to strong winds. Australian Hayden Hopewell posted a four under par round of 68 to finish third on 16 under.
